Family Medicine Residency Program

The Kuwait Board of Family Medicine was established in 1983, making it the oldest program in Kuwait. The program achieved the MRCGP (INT) accreditation in 2005. The Kuwait Board of Family Medicine prides itself in being one of the most well-established and organized post-graduate programs, following international standards.

Trainers’ & Residents’ Guide to the curriculum

The curriculum is intended as a guide to both residents and trainers. It went through progressive stages of evolution. It is designed to address the wide ranging knowledge, competencies, clinical and professional attitudes considered appropriate for a doctor intending to commence a profession of family medicine. This curriculum is a dynamic and complex document that will change and develop as medicine changes and develops.

This curriculum will be updated and reviewed every 2 years (On January/2025)

Eligibility Criteria

(1) Academic qualification must be MBBS, MB BCh or equivalent
(2) Must be an employee of a governmental authority recognized by Ministry of Health.
(3) Must have completed the internship by 30th September of the corresponding academic year.
(4) Must NOT currently on a valid scholarship or enrolled in other residency program at the time of application.

How many years is the family medicine program?

It is a five years well structured program with two exit exams one after the second year and the other after the final year.

Is the program internationally recognized?

The Kuwait Family Medicine Board is accredited by the UK Royal College Of General Practitioner and your certificate will be MRCGP-Int.

How to improve my chances to be accepted in the program?

Resident should have experience in general practice and should have a certificate in advance life support. Showing high communication skills, enthusiasm and commitment during the interview

Is there an entrance exam ?

There is no entrance exam.

Are there any chances for fellowship after finishing the board?

Some of our graduates has fellowship in nutrition and geriatric care obtained from UK and Canada.

Can I hold studying in the board in case of social need?

KIMS rules are applied in our board and it states that you can hold your study for one year twice during the five years.

Can I have maternity leave while studying in the board?

KIMS rules are applied in our board and it states that you can take one month leave after giving birth twice during the five years.

Do you accept Non Kuwaiti in your board?

KIMS rules are applied in our board and it states that the priority is for Kuwaitis. If there is a vacancy, the board will be opened to the Non Kuwaitis.

How many candidates the board can accommodate each year?

100-110 Residents.

How I will be promoted during the study in the board?

First you should full fill all the requirements of the educational and clinical sessions and the required working hours which all will be assessed continuously by the work place assessment then you will be eligible to set for the first part exam. The first part exam consists of 2 parts an MCQ part and OSCE and you have to pass both to be promoted to be a registrar. Then to be promoted for senior registrar you have to full fill the requirements of the board for the next 3 years to be eligible to enter the second exit exam which consists of 3 parts, an AKT exam, Written exam and SS clinical exam.

Is the board totally based in attending the primary care clinics?

No. The training in our board is based in attending clinical rotations in almost all hospitals in Kuwait covering most of the sub-specialty in medicine and surgery. The hospital based rotation will be in attending the out patient clinics mainly and the in patients. In addition to that you will attend the primary healthcare clinics in different regions of Kuwait.
